Surgeries and Injuries

Right now, I have 3 days until my hernia surgery. I chose to get this surgery as my lifestyle would likely cause the small part in my abdominal wall to grow over time. In fact, according to the surgeons assessment, that is what likely happened: something I did (maybe in combination with my changing from a more active lifestyle to a more computer-based lifestyle) probably created a small weakness and then, over time, my exercise routine caused the weakness to part and widen. Then, this year, the widening was enough that I could feel something: in my case an odd, light, consistent pressure.

Injuries happen, pre-injuries happen. I still continued my routines to an extent. I realize, at 48 years old, that my prep and recovery need to have more prominence both in terms of how often, how consciously they are performed and how they are prioritized.

If you are an athlete, over 35, live a very computer/smartphone-based life, please consider this a friendly reminder that life happens when we’re doing other things (and sometimes life’s results are…injuries).
